Tamil Nadu specialises in growing crops and raising livestock.
We use of Revolving Funds to purchase cows for women who do not wish to be trained in our other programmes. This is particularly suited to older women, often widows, who do not want to be re-trained.
In Tamil Nadu (and across India) widows are some of the most ostracised members of society, subject to wide-ranging abuse from families and blamed for their husbands’ deaths. Access to our Revolving Funds provides a route to financial security and reclaiming their dignity.
Revolving Funds are repaid through income generated through selling milk. We always provide two animals together in order to provide milk throughout the year, and make sure the animals are insured. This way their income is secured. Since 2014 we have provided 16 women with cows.
